The Gray Lady Comes Unglued

December 15, 2007

In Tobin Harshaw’s opinon we’re all stupid and should be completely ignored, yet he’s devoted precious space in the New York Times to draw attention to what he believes is a phantom war on Christmas (Playing the Christmas Card).

The war on Christmas is as real as a war “in Diwali” according to Harshaw.  Therefore, he argues, we shouldn’t pay any attention to the fact that 17 Democrats who voted in favor of resolutions honoring Ramadan and Diwali just a few weeks ago, either failed to vote or voted against a resolution by Congressman Steve King to honor Christmas.  Harshaw makes no secret of his contempt for Republicans.  What he thinks of all the Democrats who voted for King’s resolution, or of the the resolutions honoring Ramadan and Diwali themselves, he isn’t so compelled to share with us.

What is important to Harshaw is name-calling, coloring the facts, and browbeating the opposition for wasting time addressing such insignificant issues such as the unraveling fabric of our society.

I recognize that there is a real war going on out there, Mr. Harshaw.  The questions is, when our brave soldiers return home, will they recognize the country they risked their lives to preserve when the get back?

Predicting a White Christmas

Where is Christmas?

December 13, 2007

Do yourself a favor, and take two minutes to read this lovely post from Acts of Faith entitled Where is Christmas?

I have to admit that, at times, I wonder why I am devoting so much time and energy to this blog.  Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy working on it and interacting with my readers, etc.  But I often think to myself, “how did we ever get here?” and “why is this even an issue?”

As Melissa says in her post, Christmas used to just magically appear with no effort involved (accompanied by lots of hoping, and wishing, and dreaming, and anticipation…).  Now, however, under the influence of a handful of committed grinches, so many well-meaning people have seemingly fallen under some spell and are turning their backs on Christmas for the sake of trying to be polite and not hurt anyone’s feelings.  How does wishing another human being a Merry Christmas hurt anyone’s feelings?  How does celebrating the greatest holiday in the Western world insult anyone’s sensitivities?

Melissa’s post provided me with a few welcome moments of quite amid the storm.

Is There a War on Christmas?

December 13, 2007

Here are the ten stories from my Google Alert today.  I read through them all, but unless you’re a glutton for punishment, don’t bother with any but number 6.  It’s well written, and he makes some good points, but he has issues with Bill O’Reilly & John Gibson.  The rest either deny any attacks on Christmas, or attempt to distract attention from from the issue by railing-on about the pagan roots of Christmas, etc.

Publishing 3 of these 10 articles, the folks at the Huffington Post sure seem invested in convincing us all that there’s nothing going on as far as they can see.

The comments to these posts are also illuminating…or should I say, depressing.  The venom from those who deny there is any war on Christmas catches me a little off-guard.

War on ‘Merry Christmas’

December 12, 2007

An anonymous submission to TalkBack, the online comment feature of the Aiken Standard, left the following comment:

I went to (a retailer) to purchase something and was waited on by a very nice lady who told me that they were not allowed to wish people a Merry Christmas out of fear of offending them.

This prompted the staff of the South Carolina news organization to try their own social experiment:

…is the ‘war on Christmas’ battle being fought in Aiken, S.C.?  We at the Aiken Standard wanted to find out.  During our day-to-day out at stores and eateries, we said to clerks we hoped they had a Merry Christmas and gauged their reactions.

They have published their findings in an article entitled, War on ‘Merry Christmas’, describing the reaction they received at 10 local businesses.  While they received a return response of “Merry Christmas” only twice, they received no negative responses.  With the fiscal impact Christmas brings, one clerk knowingly replied, “I hope so, too. This is retail, you know.”

Following their template, I decided to document the responses I have experienced here in Riverside, CA so far this year.  The responses I have received after saying “Merry Christmas” to clerks, etcetera:

  • Salvation Army Red Kettle bell-ringer outside of JC Penny’s: “Happy Holidays” (note: no joke - by his appearance, he looked homeless; how much worse can it get when homeless people are politically correct?)
  • Fragrance sales clerk at Macy’s: “oh, uh…Merry Christmas” followed by, “I never know what to say to anyone” in a whisper, with facial expressions and hand gestures conveying frantic embarrassment.
  • Three Wal-Mart cashiers (separate occasions): “Merry Christmas”
  • Citbank customer service clerk: “You too”

Okay, I confess, I haven’t done much shopping yet.  But I will say that retailers seem to be slowly, if not tentatively, drifting back to normalcy regarding Christmas except, perhaps, in their advertising departments.  In fact, there appear to be warring factions struggling to control promotional campaigns with one side winning in print ads, and the other side winning on the retailer’s website, or on TV or radio ads, or in-store displays, etc.  The result makes it look like the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing and so some retailers come off looking schizophrenic.  It’s almost humorous.

The real fronts, however, remain in the entertainment/news industries, schools, municipalities and, perhaps most of all, the human resources industry.  Not coincidentally, liberal philosophy thrives unchecked in these arenas, whereas, the retail industry needs to make a profit to survive.

Please be sure to share the responses you’ve received in your comments to this post.

Voicemail Messages for the Christmas/Holiday Party

‘Carol of the Bells’ Audio Files

December 11, 2007

Two comments have posted at been posted at my YouTube account inquiring about how to obtain a copy of the “Carol of the Bells” audio file from the Wal-Mart commercial.

Since that version was produced especially for the commercial, there’s no way to obtain a copy short of Wal-Mart releasing a Christmas CD of their own.  However, here are three full-length versions of “Carol of the Bells” I’ve been able to locate (in no particular order):

I also found an excellent version by Leonard Bernstein, but the sound quality was so poor that I didn’t bother posting it here.

Ben Stein on Saying "Merry Christmas"

December 10, 2007

You may have received a forwarded email quoting Ben Stein saying:

…I am a Jew, and every single one of my ancestors was  Jewish. And it does not bother me even a little bit when people call those beautiful lit up, bejeweled trees Christmas trees. I don’t feel threatened. I don’t feel discriminated against. That’s what they are: Christmas trees. It doesn’t bother me a bit when people say, “Merry Christmas” to me. I don’t think they are slighting me or getting ready to put me in a ghetto. In fact, I kind of like it. It shows that we are all brothers and sisters celebrating this happy time of year. It doesn’t bother me at all that there is a manger scene on display at a key intersection near my beach house in Malibu. If people want a crèche, it’s just as fine with me as is the Menorah a few hundred yards away…

If you’re like me, you wondered if this was true or, perhaps, maybe a little out of context.  Well, here’s your proof: watch the video of Ben Stein as he delivered it on CBS’ Sunday Morning program in August 2006.  The name of the segment is Who Are Nick and Jessica?

Merry Christmas Ben!
